What is the best fractional in gold?
I know a dealer who will sell gold at spot plus $10 per ounce. He has good selection of:
2.5 gram, 5 gram, 10 gram and 1/2 ounce bars by Johnson Matthey 22 karat Mexican 2 and 2 1/2 peso coins 1/20 and 1/10 ounce gold Maple Leaf coins in nice shape but not original package Is there any consensus as to which type of fractional would attract the most interest or premiums from buyers. The dealer will sell any at the same price to me, so it does not seem to make a difference to him. I know many people who have little interest in smaller pieces like these but I figure that if gold goes as high as we think it might, then fractionals seem to be a very discrete way to sell later on. |
Re: What is the best fractional in gold?
I would go with the 1/10 oz Maple Leaf, as it is the most common of the items listed. Buyers may not know anything about Mexican gold, or the JM gram-sized bars. You want to inspire confidence in the eyes of the buyer.

Re: What is the best fractional in gold?
1/10 Eagles and Maples are A) Most Recognized and B) Most Boring.
Any 1/10 gold of plainly inscribed .999 or .999 purity is a safe bet. I just tasted a 1/10 Philharmonic and it was sweet with a light hint of ocean breeze. |
Re: What is the best fractional in gold?
Gotta go with the old 2 Krug coins and Brit sovereigns myself!

Re: What is the best fractional in gold?
If you are in the US then go with eagles if you can. Otherwise maples are a close next.

I buy all gold, but at that price....
I'd go with the 1/20 and 1/10 Maple leafs just make sure you bring a scale.:bear_w00t:

Re: What is the best fractional in gold?
Eagles, Maple Leafs or sovereigns.
I have Eagles. |
Re: What is the best fractional in gold?
Any really. Sovereigns if you're one of those international jet-setters.

Thanks for the input everyone.

Re: What is the best fractional in gold?
Don't get too exotic, like it says in one of the rules of buying PM's, value is in the eye of the buyer.....not the seller. If they don't understand it, it isn't worth squat!

Re: What is the best fractional in gold?
Most recognized fractionals.......
British Sovereign French 20 Franc "Rooster" Swiss 20 Franc "Helvetia" Mexican Pesos Fractional Krugerrands Fractional Maple Leafs Fractional Gold Eagles ..... in no particular order. I would stay away from the fractional ingots. Easier to fake, harder to sell. |
Re: What is the best fractional in gold?
Just bought a 1/10 gold Owl Tuvalu. The best looking IMO

Re: What is the best fractional in gold?
buy em all
but think about this; usually the markup is higher. so identify what items command premium and go with them, if you are looking to flip em when the price spikes otherwise, the smaller items are defintiely more useful and have an element of value added that he bigger chunks dont, namely, division in to attractive smaller pieces. |
Re: What is the best fractional in gold?
Fractional gold is infinitely easier to conceal as well. From what I've seen, premium mostly comes back on sale.

Re: What is the best fractional in gold?
Kugs or maples - Kugs myself.
|
Re: What is the best fractional in gold?
Out of the options posted: Maples, no question.
I'm also a big fan of gold roosters and Austrian Ducats. With all the choices out there, there is no need to pay over spot if you're patient. |

I think you get the most gold for your buck in a recognized coin with Brit sovereigns.

In your attache case you will find.......
...50 Gold Sovereigns just in case.
I'll carry what Mr. Bond, James Bond carried. |

Re: What is the best fractional in gold?
Given that list, I would tank up on the 1/10 Maples. Supposedly, Asians are partial to the Maple because it is a 4-9's purity coin, and they melt 'em down to make jewelry with.
Sovereigns (if the dealer has them) are probably a good all-around coin that is internationally recognized and is a smaller (approx 1/4oz) coin, so it is more liquid and easier to have a large quantity of them. I'm not into Mexican gold as I just don't know squat about it. The bars have "fake" written all over them to a potential buyer who won't know how to prove their authenticity. If he had 1/10 Eagles, I'd be on that like stink on rice. :bull-buddy-icon: Quote:

Re: What is the best fractional in gold?
Just picked up the 1/2 Owl too. 5000 mintage :) Between these and the Isle of Man you can't go wrong if you get them near the price of an eagle. They sell higher in the end.
